Thunderstorms are continuing to hit the upper North Island

Thunderstorms are continuing to hit the upper North Island

MetService says there is a moderate risk, across Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula, and northern and western Waikato.

Some areas could face heavy rain, hail, and wind gusts of 100 kilometres per hour.

MetService's Heather Keats says temperatures are likely to remain cold, conditions should settle through the course of today.

She says a cold southerly will continue, but the front over the upper North Island is expected to track east.

It's been a cold morning for many -- Reefton getting to minus four, and Dannevirke getting to minus two.
