Alaska has been rattled by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake, about 20 kilometres deep - prompting a local tsunami warning

The quake was about 87 kilometres south of the US state, in the early afternoon - just after 12.30pm.

The National Tsunami Warning Centre says tsunami impacts are possible for South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula.

The area's part of the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire and has regular earthquake activity.
