Those who live in the South Island's Grey District are being urged to avoid non-essential travel as heavy rain floods parts of the area

The district's Emergency Operations Centre has been activated as back country water moves towards the coast, with surface flooding from Stillwater to Moana.

A council spokesperson says Awahono School's sent children home, but rivers are starting to plateau.

State Highway 7 remains closed between Springs Junction and Reefton, while State Highway 67 from Mokihinui to Karamea Bluff's closed due to a slip.
