Mahe Drysdale is treating this week's rowing nationals as an entree to the main course next month

The double Olympic champion will compete in the single sculls and quad at the event on Lake Ruataniwha.

There will be trials for the international season early next month, where Drysdale hopes to wrest the single seat off incumbent Robbie Manson.

Drysdale says there's a bigger picture to observe.
