Derek Lardelli has received a knighthood in the Queens Birthday honours for services to Maori art.

The leading ta moko and visual artist says it will take a while for the title to settle in.

He says the honour is for Maori art - which means it belongs to the people and he just happens to be the one picking up the medal.

Lardelli says the victory belongs to Maoridom and Maori art.
