    A rookie has claimed the Indy 500 pole position for the first time in 42 years


    Israeli driver Robert Shwartzman has stunned the field to top the timesheets with a four-lap average of 374.64 kilometres per hour in qualifying, ahead of his first oval track race.

    The last rookie to take pole for the race was Italian Teo Fabi in 1983.
