The All Whites have been pipped one-nil in the opening game of their Ashes series with Australia in Canberra

Socceroos midfielder Max Balard has broken New Zealand hearts with an 87th minute strike.

All Whites coach Darren Bazeley says there were good parts but being unable to find an illusive goal hurt.

Game two is in Auckland on Tuesday.
