Prince William has agreed to become patron of the Special Air Service Regimental Association (SASRA)

The Prince of Wales expressed his admiration for the Special Air Service (SAS) in a letter that was sent to members to announce his patronage of the charity.

William said: "It is with a deep sense of honour and respect that I accept your invitation to become patron of the Special Air Service's Regimental Association.

"The SAS has long stood as a symbol of courage, resilience and unwavering dedication to duty and the service of this country.

"The association continues that camaraderie's forged on the battlefield and provides essential support to its members and families."

The SASRA is a charity that supports both serving members and veterans of the SAS.

The charity states: "No member or member's widow is ever turned away if the problem is a genuine one."

William dec lared that he is looking forward to working alongside the SASRA and has promised to help ensure "the sacrifices and achievements of SAS members past and present are recognised".

The 43-year-old royal ended his message by sending Christmas wishes to members.

He penned: "At this special time of year, I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

"May the festive season bring comfort, joy and renewed strength to all within the SAS family."

William has a number of military associations as a senior member of the royal family and last month implored young people to wear a poppy on Armistice Day.

In a video address to students aged between nine and 14, he said: "Armistice Day is an important time for us to stop and reflect; it is a reminder that Remembrance is for everyone.

"When we remember, we connect with a service in a personal way. We learn from the courage of others, and we carry their stories forward, so they are not forgotten. It's not just about the past - it's about shaping who we become in the future."

The prince continued: "Remembrance teaches us empathy, resilience and responsibility. And when we wear a red poppy or take a moment of silence, we are saying, 'Thank you. We have not forgotten and we will not forget.'"
