Gwyneth Paltrow has claimed she lost a movie role after declaring she and Chris Martin were "consciously uncoupling"

The former couple sparked discussion when they used the unusual phrase to announced they had split after a decade of marriage in 2014, and the 53-year-old star has now revealed the ridicule prompted film bosses to distance themselves from her.

Speaking on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, she said: "I was meant to do a movie and it was right after the conscious uncoupling thing with Chris. The distributor was like, this might be too hot to touch.

"That was great because I was getting a divorce and then I got fired, that was so awesome."

The Goop founder can understand why some people got "angry" about the choice of phrase, especially if they had gone through difficult or "nasty" splits from their own partners.

She said: "Say you'd had a really nasty divorce or your parents had a nasty divorce and then you hear, it doesn't have to be done this way.

"Is the inference that I messed someone up? I do understand why it was so personal for people. You only see that kind of reaction when it's personal. When we're hurt, we say things we don't mean. We get angry, we respond. That's humanity."

At the time, the two stars - who have children Apple, now 21, and Moses, 19, together - insisted they "always will be a family" as they focus on their kids.

They added: "We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner."

Gwyneth recently insisted she was proud of the way she and the Coldplay singer handled their split.

She told Britain's Vogue magazine: "I'm still so proud that we did that and that we live it. I cannot tell you how many people come up to me and thank me for that, and for helping to create that template.

"I feel like there needs to be a book, because it was real trial and error. We f***** a lot of things up and then we got a lot of things right."

Four years later, the Iron Man actress married Brad Falchuk, and she has revealed how her homelife gives her a way to "disconnect" from the state of the wider world.

She explained: "I do believe there's a strange energy in the world right now and I like to disconnect from it as much as possible.

"I'm at peace when I'm home and I hopefully have a couple of kids rattling around, but this is also where I feel so incredibly lucky about my marriage and the kind of friendship that we have, and companionship, and kismet.

"Because I could just be with him in the most simple of all surroundings and be totally fulfilled and in a good place."
