In the past year, it's rolled out a new curriculum, overhauled NCEA, scrapped the Treaty clause for school boards, and introduced structured literacy in primary schools.
Education Minister Erica Stanford says this year's focus is on supporting students who need extra help.
She wants the 15-thousand Year 7 and 8 children behind in maths the tutoring they need, and make sure literacy intervention teachers are in place.
Stanford adds a writing tool for children who are behind will also be introduced this year.
