Trisha Yearwood has shared the secret to her happy 20-year marriage to Garth Brooks

The 61-year-old singer - who wed the country superstar, 63, in 2005 - has revealed she learned from her two previous failed marriages that she needed to prioritise spending time with her husband because "marriages don't work if you're never together".

During an appearance at the In Her Own Words: An Evening with Trisha Yearwood event at The Paley Center for Media in New York City on Saturday (08.11.25), she explained: "When I married Garth and I moved to Oklahoma, I stopped. I wasn't touring 200 days a year anymore.

"I was a bonus mom to three children and I was trying to make a marriage work, because I had learned that marriages don't work if you're never together.

"That's kind of important. You have to be together. I made a conscious effort to be there, to go to soccer games and cook dinner."

The couple first met back in the late 1980s but they didn't start dating until after Brooks had split from his first wife Sandy Mahl - mother of his three daughters Taylor, August and Allie - in 2001.

Trisha went on to admit she's very happy right now and feels "comfortable" in her own skin for "the first time".

She added: "I like where I'm at in my life. I'm comfortable in my skin for possibly the first time ... I know how lucky I am that I get to do what I want to do."

The singer also shared some advice for younger fans starting out their careers, adding: "Absolutely go for what you want, the key is to say 'yes' to the things you'll enjoy."

Garth previously opened up about Trisha's relationship with his daughters and the moment he told them he was planning to propose.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last year, Garth explained: "So first of all, I have to ask the three girls their permission to get married.

"So we go out to a nice dinner, me and the three girls. And I'm trying to explain to them that I would like to marry Ms. Yearwood ...

"I said, but you girls have to take care of her. If something happens to me, she's your responsibility."

He added that his Allie daughter broke the tension with a joke: "She said: 'We've got your back, bra strap'."
