Two people drowned and five were hospitalised in varying conditions, after separate water-related events.
A search is also ongoing for a man swept down Waikato River near Graham Island on Saturday afternoon.
Police remind those heading out to enjoy the water to be prepared, properly equipped and have a plan.
Surf Life Saving New Zealand says lifeguards are patrolling 92 beaches around the country.
Anyone in unpatrolled areas should know their limits and the conditions.
