Police in Australia's Victoria, have shot an armed man dead - after a seven-hour standoff, northwest of Melbourne

The man reportedly fired a gun on a street in the town of Maryborough yesterday afternoon.

Police called in specialist and dog teams, after attempts to talk failed, but say in the end they returned the man's fire, and he died at the scene.

Victorian Police say there has been a run of police shootings in recent months.
