Gillian Anderson didn't "pay attention" to fashion in the 1990s

The X-Files star, 57, admits she never really worried about her outfits when she shot to fame 30 years ago and only "woke up" to the "beauty" of clothing when she was in her 40s.

She told Australia's Stellar magazine: "I think that if I'm honest, in the 90s, I don't know what the hell I was doing.

"And if you look at what I wore in the 90s, you might change that sentence.

"I feel like I only really started paying attention to fashion and the art of fashion ... and really kind of woke up to embrace the beauty of that art history maybe 15 years ago. So I think that I've made a particular point of embracing it and having fun with it."

She added: "I work with a stylist on a regular basis now. We have fun choosing [outfits]. I feel like what changed is that I sort of pay attention and it matters to me more."

As well as paying more attention to fashion in recent years, Gillian also previously revealed she only recently started a skincare routine.

The actress - who became a global spokeswoman for L'Oreal Paris earlier this year - told PEOPLE magazine: "I spent most of my life not really paying that much attention to any kind of a routine.

"I would be very lazy and wear the same make-up for a few days - not washing it off and adding to the layers of the mascara.

"Since becoming an ambassador and really talking about routine, I have [created one]."

The Sex Education star is glad she's able to be open about her beauty journey, which has led to her using Age Perfect Serum Le Duo for the daytime and Age Perfect Collagen Night Moisturizer in the evening.

She added: "What's great about the brand is that they're not asking me to pretend.

"It's perfectly fine to be able to say, 'You know what? I've been doing this for a year, and that's it.'"

Gillian had been speaking to L'Oreal "over a long period of time" about the partnership, and there was a "surreal" feeling when it finally became reality.

She said: "I found myself almost ignoring it just in case it didn't happen. And when it did, and I was at my first photo shoot, I think I was slightly stunned because it just felt so surreal.

"I mean, my first many years were in London, and then we moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and so felt like a small-town girl in the Midwest in a way.

"And I think as [the partnership] has gone on and I've been having more conversations as an ambassador and embracing and taking ownership of the role, it's the same as what I think potentially happens when you start to take ownership of the slogan ['Worth It'], you start to believe it a little bit more."
