The pair were on a fishing and diving trip south of Milford Sound when their six and a half metre boat failed on Saturday night.
The boaties were able to use their iPhone satellite emergency text system to call for help, with the Emergency Comms Centre in the Netherlands relaying their plight to New Zealand Police.
The following morning, Police and family members were arranging a float plane to fly replacement batteries to the men, when a recreational boatie heard the call for help on his VHF radio.
The pair's vessel was towed back to Milford Sound, around 50 kilometres away.
