It's also being reported that former midfielder and ex-Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick has already met with United bosses.
The team is currently being led by Darren Fletcher in an interim capacity.
United sacked Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim earlier this week after he publicly spoke out against the board.
Solskjaer was appointed in similar circumstances when Jose Mourinho left the club in 2018 and was given the role permanently in early 2019 - before being sacked in late 2021.
