State schools can now apply for a one-off grant to help cover asbestos removal costs
16 January 2026
The Ministry of Education reversed its position in December, announcing it would provide financial assistance to schools affected by asbestos-contaminated sand.
Last year, asbestos was discovered in several products used at early childhood centres and schools, forcing closures while urgent safety checks were carried out.
The ministry says schools should first seek reimbursement through their insurance providers - and the grant is intended for claims that are unsuccessful.
Applications close at the end of next month.
