Beyonce has encouraged Teyana Taylor to "invest in [herself]"

The 35-year-old star has known Beyonce, 44, since she was a teenager, and Teyana has always been happy to receive advice from her showbiz pal.

Speaking to People, Teyana recalled being told: "Invest in yourself. Don't take it personal. This is a business."

The singer choreographed the video for Beyonce's 2006 single Ring the Alarm - but Teyana admits that she didn't understand the music business during her younger years.

She shared: "I definitely came in the business at a time where I went into everything with my heart, and I didn't understand certain things, and I would go to her and she's just like, 'Don't take it personal.' My mom would tell me the same thing."

Teyana took Beyonce's advice with her for "the long haul because I didn't know that certain things would be isolating where you would feel like, 'Oh s***, in order for it to be done the way I see it in my head, I'm going to have to do this s*** myself".

Meanwhile, in December, Teyana revealed that she was focused on acting because she felt "claustrophobic in the music space".

The movie star - who has enjoyed success as a musician and as an actress - told Variety: "Honestly, I've just always been a character.

"As I got older, kids would play and I would watch movies - some, probably, I should not have been watching. I've always been into how an actor can emote. I always wanted to be Julia Roberts or Kate Winslet.

"As I got into music, everything else was put to a back burner. I didn't get the opportunity to go to classes and study it the way I would've liked to. Once I started to feel claustrophobic in the music space, I was like, I need to pour into other things that I love."
