The earthquake hit around 11.40 Friday night local time, about 3 kilometres outside of South El Monte, near Los Angeles, and was about 18km deep.
There've been no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
This earthquake was close to the epicentre of the Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987, which was a magnitude 5.9 and killed 8 people.
