A Southland blaze that claimed the lives of a mother and her 11-year-old son last week, was caused by a heater

A Southland blaze that claimed the lives of a mother and her 11-year-old son last week, was caused by a heater

The fire broke out at a Manapouri property early on Thursday.

Fire and Emergency's established a heater came into contact with flammable material -- likely bedding -- and the home had no working smoke alarms.

    A post-mortem's been completed.
