Sprinter Tiaan Whelpton has pointed to a new training regime as the key behind breaking a 30-year-old Athletics New Zealand national record

His time of 6.50 seconds at the ACT Championships in Canberra snapped Gus Nketia's 6.59 mark set in 1995.

Whelpton says his strength training alongside an Olympic shot putter has paid dividends.
