We should learn this afternoon who'll be leading our largest cities for the next three years

Voting in local elections closes at midday.

Local Government New Zealand figures show just over 28 percent of eligible voters had cast a vote as of Thursday.

Auckland's Wayne Brown, Christchurch's Phil Mauger and Dunedin's Jules Radich are seeking another term, but Wellington, Hamilton, Lower Hutt and Invercargill are all guaranteed new mayors.

Indicative progress results will be released from about 1pm.
