    Nikki Reed has taken aim at the "crazy" wellness industry for "capitalizing on people's hope"

    The Twilight star, 37, has spent years battling a mystery medical condition and she turned to wellness brands when she struggled to get a diagnosis from her doctors but Nikki is adamant she was sold products that "weren't working".


    During an appearance on Taylor Lautner's The Squeeze podcast, she explained: "The placebo effect is real, but it doesn't work on me.

    "I had spent so much time exploring a lot of this and the world of wellness and supplements. I won't bore you with it, but I ended up in this crazy health scare that spanned years and years.

    "I was seeing, as you can imagine, great doctors because I'm an information seeker. I'm seeking out the best doctors that I can and really researching for years and years.

    "I couldn't figure this out and it was making me crazy, but what was making me equally as crazy was the amount of things I was being sold that weren't working."

    She added: "Not only do they not work, but it's an industry that's capitalizing on people's hope because they're hoping that it works.

    "They're taking these things, and they're spending their hard-earned money on this massive belief that they're going to get better from an industry that's taking advantage of them."

    Nikki - who runs her own wellness brand The Absorption Company with her actor husband Ian Somerhalder - went on to say: "I live in this space because I love the world of nontraditional medicine, but I also love Western [medicine] that's very cut and dry,.

    "I think there's a place for all of it, and I live somewhere in the middle of this space of wellness but also traditional medicine. I see and appreciate both."

    Nikki did not reveal whether she eventually solved her health issues but insisted giving up caffeine was a massive help.

    She said: "I actually quit all caffeine about seven years ago, and my life got so much better as a result.

    "Life is a series of choices, [and] I also don't drink alcohol. How do I make my life feel the best it can be? What can I cut out that's not serving me anymore?

    "Here we go, but, yeah, life got better without caffeine."
