Hilary Duff's husband Matthew Koma saved their relationship by wooing her back using Words With Friends

The 38-year-old singer/actress married the singer/songwriter in 2019 and they are parents to three children together as well as Hilary's son from her first marriage to ice hockey player Mike Comrie, and she has now opened up about their romance by revealing Matthew fell in love with her on their first date and he salvaged the relationship after a split by contacting her via the online game.

During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Hilary said: "We got set up from my A R person. I was at [record label] RCA for like a nanosecond and my A R person there set us up on like a word date ... It was pretty immediate but we weren't like outwardly flirting but I was like: "Wait, this person is so fun to talk to.'

"And our meeting was like two hours long. And then I was like: 'I've got a child at home I've got to go'. But we were just talking like music and taste and I was like a quarter of the way through making a record and he was definitely cute ...

"And then I found out a month ago that he sent an email ... He found [the old email] and he sent it to me. He wrote [to his manager]: 'Two hours with Hilary. I think I'm in love'. "

The couple worked together on several songs he had written and became a couple after he asked her to "be his Valentine" but the relationship stalled several times and they seemingly split up for good after a nasty argument.

Hilary explained Matthew refused to talk to her afterwards even though she was keen to make amends and she had to wait several months until he contacted her again via Words With Friends, which kick started their love affair once again.

She said: "He was so nice to me ... I was not ready to accept all of that yet. I was coming out of a long relationship, a divorce, I was just like chaotic.

"I think I needed some chaos first .... I think coming from a broken household, I was like I'm going to push this guy and poke all the holes in it that I can to see if he's going to like stick around ...

{After that argument] he wouldn't speak to me and that made me made mad ... We didn't talk and then he Words With Friends-ed me a few of months later.

"I almost wrecked my car I was so excited. But it's kind of fun and he's so good with words ... and that was right before my 30th birthday."

Hilary revealed Matthew came to her birthday party and they went on to take a holiday together where they discussed having children for the first time - and just months later she discovered she was pregnant with their first child together.

Hilary added: "Then literally we were going away [to Utah] we were there and on the way back on the airplane I was like: 'When do you want to have kids?' and he was like: 'Probably like 35'. And then I was pregnant like two months later."
