Hilary Duff claims Jennifer Coolidge was "mean" and "scary" to her on the set of A Cinderella Story

The actress - who was 15 years old in the 2004 comedy-romance movie - played Samantha Montgomery, and Jennifer, 64, played Samantha's evil stepmother, Fiona.

And Hilary, 38, had to constantly remind herself that Jennifer was pretending to be wicked, and that the pair were making a film.

Hilary told Variety: "She was mean to me, so it was a little scary because I was only 15, and she was mean to me because she was my evil stepmother.

"At the time, I had to be like, 'You're filming a movie.'"

Over 20 years since A Cinderella Story was released, Jennifer has seen huge success, especially for her role as Tanya McQuoid in the award-winning HBO black comedy-drama anthology series, The White Lotus.

And Hilary praised her A Cinderella Story co-star for her career achievements.

She said: "It's been so much fun to watch her career. She just goes there in such a big way that it was really impressive and slightly intimidating as a teenager."

A Cinderella Story saw Samantha be excited about meeting her internet boyfriend, Austin (Chad Michael Murray), at North Valley High School's Halloween dance.

However, at the same time, Samantha is being repeatedly exploited by Fiona.

At the time of shooting the Warner Bros. movie, people had phones with physical keyboards

And Hilary's 13-year-old son Luca - whom she has with her 45-year-old ex-husband, former professional ice hockey player Mike Comrie - could not get his head around how people punched buttons to type letters.

Hilary said: "I did just talk to my son about how difficult it was to text back in the day, and how you had to push the button three times sometimes to get the letter you desired.

"And he was like, 'No, I don't understand.' And I was like, 'OK, moving on, never mind.'"

After Hilary split from Mike in 2014 - with their divorce finalised in 2016 - after four years of marriage, she dated 38-year-old singer Matthew Koma.

Hilary and Matthew got married in 2019, and they went on to welcome daughters Banks, seven, Mae, four, and Townes, 18 months.
