Tsunami warnings have been further lifted for most of New Zealand, but not everyone's in the clear yet

Tsunami warnings have been further lifted for most of New Zealand, but not everyone's in the clear yet

The warnings were put in place soon after a magnitude 8.1 earthquake near the Kermadec Islands about 8.30 this morning.

Anyone who evacuated can return home.

But the National Emergency Management Agency says the North Cape, from Ahipara to the Bay of Islands, and the North Island's east coast from Cape Runaway to Tolaga Bay, and Great Barrier and the Chatham Islands, still remain under beach and marine threat.

It's warning strong, unusual currents and surges are still expected around New Zealand's coast and people should not be in or near the water.
