Watermelons are hitting shelves earlier than ever this year, after a bumper season in Gisborne

Watermelons are hitting shelves earlier than ever this year, after a bumper season in Gisborne

LeaderBrand produce says thanks to a hot dry season, an abundance of watermelons are ready two weeks sooner than usual.

Manager of Farming, Gordon McPhail, says it's welcome news for the East Coast, after a difficult couple of years.

He says farmers needed a strong vegetable crop - financially and mentally.
