Brandi Carlile broke down in tears after her eldest child admitted a fear of not having parents if the US Supreme Court changed the law on marriage equality

The 44-year-old singer felt "ashamed" over not considering that Evangeline, 11, could think that.

It came as former Rowan County, Kentucky, clerk Kim Davis bid for an Obergefell v. Hodges challenge - which the Supreme Court rejected on November 10 - after she refused to issue same-sex licenses following the court's landmark decision in 2015 because it conflicts with her religious beliefs as an Apostolic Christian.

Asked when Brandi - who also has a seven-year-old daughter called Elijah with her 50-year-old wife Catherine Shepherd - last cried, she told The Guardian newspaper's Saturday magazine: "I cried last week after talking about marriage equality with my daughters.

"My oldest let slip that she believed that if the Supreme Court overturned Obergefell, she wouldn't have parents anymore. I felt angry with my country and ashamed that I didn't consider the possibility that she might think that."

Elsewhere in her interview, the 11-time Grammy award-winner admitted she will forever say sorry to the children she "bullied" whilst in school.

Asked who she would like to most apologise to, Brandi shared: "To kids I bullied in school. I have apologised, and I will continue to. To repay those things karmically, I will watch my kids' hearts like a hawk for signs of hardening or any distortions of empathy that they might develop."

The Story hitmaker says she feels her "happiest right now".

Brandi added: "I can see that I'm in a kind of sweet spot: my parents are alive, my kids are little, my wife is hot, and my body doesn't hurt."

In 2009, the artist met her wife over the phone when Catherine worked as a coordinator for The Beatles member Paul McCartney's foundation.

After they met in person in New York City the following year, they got married in 2012 - with three separate wedding ceremonies.

Brandi and Catherine welcomed Evangeline in June 2014, and she was conceived using IVF, harvesting Brandi's eggs for Catherine to carry.

The singer admitted she initially "struggled" with not being able to carry their daughter because of her big workload and busy touring schedule, but eventually accepted it.

In 2021, Brandi told People: "I made peace with knowing that there was some pioneering involved in what we were doing, to the point where there wasn't even a two-mother template on a birth certificate yet.

"There is now, but psychologically, all these things are really hard. And the high dive into parenting is a complicated leap to take anyway."

Brandi and Catherine welcomed Elijah into the world in March 2018, and she was conceived by artificial insemination, IUI, in 2017 because Catherine "struggled" with IVF hormones.

And Brandi - who did not carry Elijah - felt more confident as a parent the second time around.

In January 2021, she wrote in an essay for Parents: "I never felt a pang of the anxiety, guilt, or confusion that we wrestled with the first time.

"Eli was enormous. Almost 10 pounds! She was a dream baby. We call her 'joy bomb' because she has just exploded joy into our world, and she's finally taught our serious little Evangeline how to belly laugh."
