    A mix of severe gale and wet weather is expected to batter the South Island today


    MetService has issued a strong wind watch and a heavy rain warning for Fiordland, and the headwaters of the Otago lakes and rivers, with a heavy rain watch for the ranges of Westland.

    A strong wind warning is in place for the Canterbury High Country.

    Meteorologist John Law, says we're getting the aftermath of Australia's recent heatwave.

    He says Otago and Canterbury's inland areas will take the brunt of it.
