A renewed warning for those entering the water as weather looks to improve

A renewed warning for those entering the water as weather looks to improve

A total of five people have drowned over the holiday period which ended at 7 this morning.

It comes after two deaths over the weekend when two men were caught in a rip at Northland's Glinks Gully.

There are provisionally 78 drownings for all of 2025 - up from 72 the year before.

Water Safety NZ Chief Executive Glen Scanlon says swimmers need to be using common sense.

He says to never swim or dive alone and only swim at beaches which are patrolled.
