The Government hopes the roll-out of "open electricity" makes it easier for Kiwis to get cheaper power

The Government hopes the roll-out of "open electricity" makes it easier for Kiwis to get cheaper power

It's changing data-sharing rules for the electricity sector, like it's previously done with open banking.

It expects about two-million households and 165-thousand small business customers to benefit.

Energy Minister Simon Watts says the changes will ultimately make it easier for consumers to get cheaper power plans.

He says people hold lots of information and data about their energy usage, and this will make it easier for that to be shared with providers.
