A rideshare driver accused of killing a promising young New Zealand lawyer in a hit-and-run in Australia has died before his trial could begin

A 65-year-old was facing several charges for allegedly using his phone while driving and fatally running over 28-year-old Mitch East in Sydney - in March 2024.

After months-long delays, the man eventually pleaded not guilty.

He was expected to go to trial this year, but the Daily Mail reports the case took a turn when it was revealed the man died in November.

As a result, all criminal charges against him were withdrawn and the case dismissed.
