Sam Smith was left unable to walk after a skiing injury that led to the singer being taken off a slope in a "blood bag"

The 'Latch' singer, 32, was photographed using a cane and wearing a leg brace in January and has now spoken out about how he ended up in agony and temporarily crippled after they tore their ACL and had to be rescued during a ski trip.

Sam - who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns - told the 'Sidetracked' podcast: "I've been really focusing on my mental stuff for the last seven months because I actually broke my ACL. "I completely ripped my ACL. I was skiing. I was an idiot and went on a black slope on the second day. "I got taken down in a blood bag. It was the worst. It's a permanent thing." He went on about the lasting impact of his horror injury to his ACL: "It's in between your bones and helps you jump and spring around. "It completely ripped and I decided to go down the non-surgical route but I couldn't walk for a month on this leg and it was awful. "It was the first time I'd ever not been able to move and I was holding onto a bit of weight. I was very anxious. I used it as an excuse to get my s*** together." Sam also told how they have tried to wipe old flames from their life by getting rid of their mobile phone and starting afresh on one without any social media. The singer added: "I actually just got rid of my phone and I got a new phone. It's the first time I don't have my library of music, that I'd had since I was like 11. "I started again - fully started again. I needed an American number and my phone was just full of people like exes and all these different people through the years. "And I took social media off. Everything It's crazy. I find myself sitting on benches now in parks just looking at the trees." Sam is due to make a stage comeback next month for a performance at the BBC Proms.
