Katie Thurston is feeling "optimistic" as she continues to battle stage four breast cancer

The 34-year-old former Bachelorette star was diagnosed in February and the following month discovered her breast cancer had spread to her liver but Katie insisted she is looking ahead to the future and is "doing good, all things considered"

Speaking to E! News, she said: "I actually get my six-month scan [next week], so I feel very optimistic about it."

She added that the support from her family and friends - particularly her husband Jeff Arcuri - has been vital.

She said: "You can't face cancer alone. You really have to rely on your friends and family. And to have someone who's your partner, who's right there with you every step of the way? It's meant everything."

Katie also revealed that her diagnosis has made her more patient with others.

She said: "You never know what someone is going through. I find that I'm more patient with strangers. If someone is driving too slow or grumpy, you don't know what they're going through in their own life. And so I just feel like I'm more kind."

Katie previously revealed she will be taking medication for the rest of her life.

She said: "I wanted to give an update on my latest chapter as someone experiencing [and] navigating stage IV breast cancer.

"The thing that people don't know with stage IV is I will be on medication for the rest of my life. It's kind of like a maintenance plan, which is great but also can be scary."

Because the cancerous spots on her liver appear to have "disappeared on its own", if her next scans come back clear, Katie will proceed with her plans to undergo a double mastectomy.

She said: "In November, I have scheduled my double mastectomy. Things are working so far and we're adjusting."
