Clayton Weatherston, now 50, was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 18 years for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Sophie Elliott in Dunedin in 2008.
She was 22.
He will remain in prison until he dies, unless it's deemed he no longer poses a risk to the safety of the public.
Sophie's father, Gil Elliott , believes there's no way he's changed.
He says Weatherston is unpredictable and it would be a danger to the public if they let him out.
