Army soldier killed in vehicle rollover during training in north Queensland

Department of Defence says an Australian soldier has died after a single-vehicle rollover during training at the Australian Army's Townsville Field Training Area.

An Australian soldier has died in a vehicle rollover during training in north Queensland.

Paramedics and a rescue helicopter responded to the incident at the army's Townsville Field Training Area west of Townsville after 6:00pm on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Department of Defence confirmed an ADF member involved in the rollover died at the scene.

Two other male soldiers, one in their 30s and another in their 20s, also suffered injuries but have been discharged from Townsville University Hospital.

The Department of Defence requested the privacy of defence members and their families be respected.

"Defence will provide further updates when possible," a spokesperson said.

    Incident involved 3RAR

Federal Member for Herbert Phillip Thompson, who is an army veteran, said the incident involved the Townsville-based 3rd Brigade.

3RAR is the army's armoured infantry brigade comprising of more than 4,000 personnel.

"They weren't all there but that unit is very close, they are very tight-knit and they are rallying around each other in what is a tough time," Mr Thompson said.

"They wanted to highlight the great work of [emergency services] on the ground who arrived very quickly.

"When tragedy hits, everyone comes together, but it is a sad day to hear of people injured during training."

In 2023, three Australian soldiers and three United States marines were injured when two military vehicles rolled at Ewan Road near the town of Paluma, north of Townsville.

In 2021, soldiers Craftsman Brendon Payne and Warrant Officer Class 2 Ryan Leslie died in a single-vehicle rollover on Dotswood Road south of Townsville Field Training Area.
