Sofia Coppola "clung to [her] feminine side" after growing up around "a lot of guys"

The 54-year-old filmmaker - who is the daughter of legendary director Francis Ford Coppola - believes that being surrounded by so many guys during her younger years has actually helped her to find her creative voice.

The Lost in Translation director told People: "I feel lucky that I grew up around film and learned a lot about it. And then I just found my own way. And I think going up with a lot of guys, I really clung to my feminine side. I loved films and trying things, and I found what I was into."

Sofia - who has Romy, 18, and Cosima, 15, with her husband Thomas Mars - is now enjoying sharing her work with her daughters.

She said: "They like The Bling Ring a lot, but I don't think they see it as a cautionary tale. But it's fun to get to show them. I showed my younger daughter The Virgin Suicides for the first time at MoMA, so that was a really exciting moment."

Sofia is now keen to inspire the next generation of female filmmakers, too.

The director explained: "I hope that I can encourage. I mean, there're lots more young women filmmakers [now], but it makes me happy when young filmmakers come up and then tell me that my films inspired them.

"It's such a thrill that they're connecting with them, and it makes me happy that it inspires more people to make films."

Meanwhile, Sofia previously explained that she's always been inspired by fashion.

The director premiered her documentary about designer Marc Jacobs, her long-time friend, at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year, and Sofia admitted that the fashion industry has always served as a big inspiration for her.

The acclaimed filmmaker - whose documentary is called Marc by Sofia - said at a press conference: "It's just something that I love and it's inspiring and exciting to me. I've always loved fashion. [And] I have teenage daughters now..."
