Major electricity companies are taking a big step today, towards protecting national energy security

Under agreements made by Genesis with Mercury, Meridian and Contact - an emergency coal reserve is being established at Huntly Power Station.
The Commerce Commission approved the deals in November.
Genesis Chief Executive Malcolm Johns says they allow the company to make significant needed investment - to keep all generation units operating.
He says units that were going into retirement will now be around for another decade.
