Kim Wilde found social media "intrusive and overwhelming"

The Kids in America hitmaker reduced her online presence in 2024 and she worries about young artists, who feel they need to be "very exposed" and accessible in ways she didn't have to deal with at her pop peak.

She told BANG Showbiz: "I think it must be very hard, really hard for new artists.

"I came off social media because I found it so intrusive and overwhelming in so many different ways, for so many different reasons. I feel glad that I was able to have a degree of anonymity during the '80s and '90s, that's been taken away now. It's very exposing.

"People are very exposed now. I don't think it's altogether a healthy thing."

However, Kim insisted a social media presence isn't vital for success.

She added: "But you know what there's plenty of artists that don't do that and are doing really great.

"If you look at a band like Wunderhorse, for instance, there's nothing like that. They're just a great live band who are going out and being brilliant, and that's it, take it or leave it, and everyone is taking it.

"They've sold out Alexandra Palace, 10,000 people are gonna turn up, they don't want to know what kind of socks the drummer is wearing or who has just chucked their girlfriend, they're just not interested."

Because she doesn't use social media, the 65-year-old star loves performing live so she can connect with "real humans".

She said: "I took myself off social media about a year ago. I don't look up my stuff. I did read a few reviews which were lovely.

"But I don't really have much of an idea of my impact, which is why it's lovely to go on tour because then you see the real stuff firsthand, not the blah, blah, blah.

"Real humans reacting to what you do. That's what is so exciting about touring."
