Ben Affleck vomited between takes while filming Armageddon

The 53-year-old actor has recalled how he was suffering from food poisoning as he shot one of the 1998 movie's most emotional scenes with co-star Bruce Willis and was left throwing up on set as a result.

Ben told Fox 32 Chicago: "When we shot that scene, I had food poisoning.

"I wasn't an experienced enough actor at that point to know that you can just pick up the phone and be like, 'I'm too sick to work today.' I'm like, 'I better come in.'

"So I went and I was literally - it's the only time it's ever happened in my life - vomiting between takes."

The Rip star joked: "They had a garbage can and I was (vomiting between takes). And it probably made the scene better."

Despite his illness, Affleck has fond memories of working on the disaster movie - which also featured Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler and Steve Buscemi in the cast.

He said: "I actually saw Steve Buscemi last night at the premiere of The Rip, and we were reminiscing about that movie and thinking about how that was the weirdest, kind of wonderful, strange, otherworldly movie experience."

Armageddon director Michael Bay previously recalled how Affleck "felt like s***" as he filmed the ending to the flick.

He told The Hollywood Reporter last year: "That movie was such a blast. It was like a summer camp and I was the counsellor.

"Everyone was so misbehaved and so funny. I'll tell you the truth. There was a three-gallon painting bucket next to Ben Affleck. He had the stomach flu. He felt like s***. He looked like s***, too. And he had to do that scene between him throwing up. We kept shooting him. And he's great in that. And he's great in that partially because he had the stomach flu."

Meanwhile, Affleck recently stated that he doesn't want his children to "waste" their lives by following him into acting.

The Gone Girl star - who has Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13, with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner - told E! News: "You put something on your children when you have a public life and that's complicated. We really want to give them room to figure out what they want to do.

"I wouldn't push them into that. They're brilliant and lovely and wonderful and we love them and we're proud of them and hope that they don't waste their life acting."
