Teacher aides are rejoicing after landing themselves a historic pay equity settlement

Teacher aides are rejoicing after landing themselves a historic pay equity settlement

The Ministry of Education and NZEI Te Riu Roa have agreed to settle the claim lodged in 2016 for the more than 22-thousand teacher aides around the country.

The new rates will see teacher aides pay rise by between 23 and 34 per cent - backdated from February.

Ally Kemplen is a teacher aide at Auckland's Newton Central School and says it's been a long time coming.

She says some teacher aides are supporting children with medical procedures - while others work with children who have trouble regulating emotion which puts them in physical danger.

Teacher aides will discuss the details over the coming weeks before voting on the deal.
