Hot weather, strong winds and heavy rain are in store for much of the South Island

MetService has issued an orange wind warning, with severe gale northwesterlies of up to 120 kilometres an hour, expected across the Canterbury High Country and plains today.

An orange heavy rain warning is in place along the West Coast.

Meteorologist Lewis Ferris says warm winds and rain could stick around into the weekend.
