A global shortage of beef could be playing a key role in skyrocketing domestic mince prices

New research from Rabobank shows the price of mince has risen 18 percent in the year to October.
It says New Zealand exports more than 80 percent of its red meat overseas, and supermarket retailers are having to compete with export values.
Senior Animal Protein Analyst Jen Corkran says cow herds are at multi decade lows in countries like the USA, making demand incredibly high.
She says when demand drops off because the price has hit a ceiling, that's when the prices could drop off.
