Sir Rod Stewart makes his own honey

The Maggie May singer and his wife Penny Lancaster get the sweet liquid from 320,000 bees living in the garden of his mansion in Hertfordshire.

Penny revealed that she and Rod, 80, used to keep the honey for themselves but their bees now make so much that they give some away to family and friends.

The 54-year-old model and TV star explained that they got hives - each housing around 40,000 bees - in order to produce their own honey as she likes it in her lemon tea every morning.

Penny is quoted by the Daily Star newspaper as saying: "With our mature fruit trees, other native plants and surrounding farmers' land our garden is the perfect home for bees. We have eight hives plus a shed for extracting and storing honey."

She added: "Our bedroom overlooks beautiful mature oak and beech trees and a topiary area.

"I press the button on our automatic blinds and the view gently seeps in. Rod and I sit up in bed for 10 minutes, gaze out and natter over a cuppa.

"Rod enjoys English breakfast tea and I have hot water with lemon juice, which is good for digestion and fighting inflammation, plus a teaspoon of homemade honey."

Meanwhile, Penny recently revealed that she can always tell when Rod is ill because his famously spiky hair goes floppy instead.

She said: "Man-flu aside - usually feigned for the purpose of some attention - Rod doesn't do self-pity, although there are one or two telltale signs when Rod is truly sick and not just bluffing.

"His hair flops like two sad curtains on either side of a middle parting - it's as if his trademark bouffant throws in the towel, too, and needs some recuperation time."

Meanwhile, Rod suggested last month that he has nothing left on his bucket list after playing the legends slot at the Glastonbury Festival this summer.

The Sailing singer told People: "I'm very happy with my achievements thus far."

Asked if he'd like to headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show, Rod said: "I've done Glastonbury, so I'm happy.

"There's no bucket list. I've done it all."
