Last year's major storms in the South Island have caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage

New figures from the Insurance Council show the September storms resulted in more than 320-million dollars in damage claims.

It says the storms were part of a pattern of extreme weather events, driven by climate change.

Last year was a record-breaking year for extreme weather claims.
