Whitney Hansen will be at the helm for the next two seasons, succeeding Allan Bunting after he vacated the role following a third placed finish at the World Cup.
Vicky Dombroski is the only other female to occupy the position, back in 1994.
Hansen will forgo her job as head of rugby at Matatu to take up the Black Ferns position.
Matatu General Manager Sarah Munro says Hansen's had a profound impact, both on and off the field.
Tony Christie and Riki Flutey have been retained as assistants, but it appears Steve Jackson and Dan Cron won't return.
NZR say the wider coaching and management group will be confirmed in the New Year.
