Luigi Mangione will not face the death penalty if convicted of killing UnitedHealthcare's chief executive

Luigi Mangione will not face the death penalty if convicted of killing UnitedHealthcare's chief executive

Mangione is alleged to have fatally shot Brian Thompson outside a New York hotel in December 2024.

The 27-year-old is pleading not guilty to charges including federal counts of stalking and separate state murder charges.

The BBC's Nada Tawfik says Mangione's defence had a very technical argument - which the US District Judge agreed with.

They suggested the counts for murder and weapons offences didn't meet the legal obligations necessary for the death penalty.
