Pleas for fishers to steer clear of Papanui Point - one of New Zealand's deadliest drowning hotspots

Pleas for fishers to steer clear of Papanui Point - one of New Zealand's deadliest drowning hotspots

Two men disappeared rock fishing off the point in October 2021.

A coroner's report - released this week - has recommended closing public access.

Since 1980, there have been 18 confirmed drownings at the location.

Water Safety NZ Chief Executive Glen Scanlon says their priority is ensuring people have the information they need to be safe.

He encourages people not to fish there, and to always wear a lifejacket.
