After bowling the tourists out for 128 after lunch on day three, the Black Caps cantered to the meagre target of 56 before tea.
Kane Williamson hit the winning runs with a four through mid-wicket to complete the victory, as the hosts walked off on 57 for one.
Jacob Duffy finished with figures of five for 38 - his second five-wicket bag in a three-test career - and six for the match.
Duffy told TVNZ it was a team effort, especially after fellow bowler Blair Tickner was ruled out with an injury fielding.
The Black Caps take a 1-nil lead in the series ... the third and final test starts on Thursday at Mount Maunganui.
