Donald Trump has branded Robert De Niro "sick and demented" in a heated response to the actor calling him "an idiot"

The US president and the Killers of the Flower Moon star have exchanged a number of barbs over the last few years, and after 82-year-old De Niro warned this week that the commander-in-chief would "ruin the country", Trump has now hit back.

Blasting representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, who left the Capitol building early during his State of the Union address on Sunday (24.02.26), Trump ranted on his Truth Social platform: "They had the bulging, bloodshot eyes of crazy people, LUNATICS, mentally deranged and sick who, frankly, look like they should be institutionalised.

"They should actually get on a boat with Trump Deranged Robert De Niro, another sick and demented person with, I believe, an extremely Low IQ, who has absolutely no idea what he is doing or saying - some of which is seriously CRIMINAL!"

Continuing his rant against De Nero, Trump also hit out at another high-profile critic, Rosie O'Donnell, who moved to Ireland last year in protest at his re-election but recently confirmed she had been back to the US for a brief visit to her family.

He continued: "When I watched him break down in tears last night, much like a child would do, I realised that he may be even sicker than Crazy Rosie O'Donnell, who is right now in Ireland trying to figure out how to come back into our beautiful United States.

"The only difference between De Niro and Rosie is that she is probably somewhat smarter than him, which isn't saying much.

"The good news is that America is now Bigger, Better, Richer, and Stronger than ever before, and it's driving them absolutely crazy!"

Trump's attack came after De Niro expressed his fears for the US under the president's leadership.

Speaking on The Best People with Nicole Wallace, he said: "He's an idiot. We gotta get rid of him. He's gonna ruin the country.

"?I don't want everybody going around with their Maga, the American flags, like they're the only ones. We are Americans too."

He later added: "People have to resist, resist, resist, resist, resist. That's the only way.

"There's no magic. There's no nothing - people are not going to go away, even if Trump dies for some reason by having an illness or something. Parts of that movement are still there, and that's the scary part. It has to be neutralised by the people."

And in an emotional speech at the State of the Swamp - an event in Washington intended as a riposte to the State of the Union address -De Niro described the president as "failing, flailing and desperate" and said he felt "betrayed by [his] country".
